It has been one week since I tore my gastroc muscle.
The first few days were pretty depressing; I didn’t leave my bed, nor did I bother to get dressed. Then, I slowly started to accept that injuries happen, I will heal and it could be a whole lot worse.
I decided that even though I was not going to be doing burpees or a kickboxing class anytime soon, that I could put on a sports bra and do a mat workout in the corner of my bedroom. I have now transformed that little corner into my new “gym” complete with a set of weights, a theraband, yoga mat, thera-ball and a pilates ring. My plan is to do something on that mat everyday that I can during my recovery and to add swimming for cardio. Who knows? Maybe I will finally rock that teaser after 6 weeks of doing mat pilates.
Here’s the bottom line (and how my own personal experience can perhaps inspire you in some way). Shit happens. You feel pissed or sad, and then at some point, you do your best to look at the positives in your life and recognize that you will get through whatever crap you’re going through. Whether it’s a physical injury, a depressing time in your life, a bad marriage, an anxiety-causing career shift, a challenging child…whatever…try and focus on the good stuff, get the support you need, be nice to yourself and be patient. You’re going to get through it, and you’ll probably come out stronger on the other end.
p.s. If you see me hobbling on the street in my ugly boot, please say hello. And if this little diddy made you feel any better about anything, I’d love for you to share in the comments below.
